One thing I enjoy about traveling is the chance to try new restaurants and new dishes! My recent trip to the Scandinavian part of the world became a trip around the world in food. Our first stop in the food adventure was fika.
Fika is simply a coffee break with friends while you enjoy a yummy morsel of food. The most important part of fika is the conversation. Zoee took us to her favorite coffee place called Espresso House http://www.espressohouse.com/. Jim and I hadn't acclimated to the time difference, so we slept right through breakfast. It was too late for lunch, too early for dinner but perfect time for fika.
I am a cappuccino person. I love the sugary, flavored, goodness of gas station cappuccino. Since I was struggling with jet lag, I figured a cappuccino would do the trick. Zoee warned me cappuccino was different in Sweden but I had to have one. Boy, was she right! To me, it was a very strong coffee with cream in it. No flavorings, no sugar. Good thing I also bought a Pepsi Max!
Since we missed breakfast, I was hungry for more than just a pasty or cinnamon bun. But I didn't want anything to filling, since I wanted to save room for dinner. Jim and I decided to share a Chicken Hickory Bagel and a chocolate muffin. It was a bagel with cream cheese, greens, onion, grilled chicken breast drizzled with BBQ sauce. Very simple, but very wonderful! It is a sandwich I hope to replicate one day.
We spent the rest of the day wondering around the city, taking tons of photos. For dinner Zoee took us to her favorite Indian resturuant call New Delhi Tandoor http://newdelhitandoor.se/index.html
Jim and I had never eaten Indian food, and we were looking forward to trying it. After pouring over the menu, we finally made our choices. We each ordered something different and shared the dish. It’s a great way to try new things. Dinner started with a salad from the salad bar. They had some of the best pickled onions and pickled carrots! I could have made a meal on the pickled carrots! Our meal was served with a large dish of rice. Our choices consisted of Chicken Butter Masala which is chicken breast cooked in a buttery curry sauce, Chicken Korma which is chicken with fried cashews, almonds in a creamy sauce with ginger, and Lamm Tikka Malsa which is marinated and grilled lamb with almond and coconut sauce. Of course we had to some garlic naan bread. Dinner was spicy but delicious. We waddled out of there so full. Price was reasonable as well; I can see why it’s a favorite of Zoee’s.
The next day we decided to take our taste buds to China. We tried a place Zoee had never eaten at, so it was a new experience for us all. We went to Tatung http://www.tatung.se/. The menu was vast; we had such a hard time deciding what to order. Jim decided to try Friterad Crabsticks med sӧtsur which is batter fried crabmeat with sweet and sour sauce. They were the favorite of the night and we almost fought over them. I had Stekt Biff med Broccoli which translated is basically beef and broccoli with bamboo shoots. Zoee decided to try Stekt Kyckling med Ananas which was fried chicken with pineapple. It can be challenging to order food from menus when they are printed in a different language. However all the places we ate also had the menu in English. We topped the night off sharing a dessert called Tatung Special which was deep fried banana & pineapple with ice cream, fruit and whipped cream. Let me tell you….that was incredible.
Our last morning in Sweden Zoee wanted us to try chocolate balls. She has discovered a little Italian café called Il Café De Italia which has great prices and great food. We each ordered a chocolate ball while I had hot chocolate and they had chia tea latte. It was cold enough outside that you wanted a hot drink.
Wow, I’ve rambled on about food and haven’t even told you about Copenhagen yet! I’ll save that for another time. Be sure and check out some of my pictures on my photos page.
