Saturday had been one of those days. It started with a plan and it went south very fast. I don’t know why I plan my weekends out; it never turns out like I plan it. But I hope one weekend will go exactly as planned so I continue to dream. So after a day of everything going wrong (which I won’t bore you with) we decided it was time to get out of the house and reward ourselves for having survived the day.
The restaurant sits upon a hill like a beacon welcoming the weary and heavy laden. Ok maybe not, but it felt like it at the time. As usual the place was full but there always seems to be a table waiting when you get there. The wonderful smells hit you as soon as you pull in the parking lot. We just settled in our booth and a basket of hot tortilla chips and salsa were delivered to our table. Real salsa. Not tomato paste from a can but real salsa which has just a hint of heat to it. With the first bite I can feel the tension start to leave my body. Now the fun part….what to order this time?
I love the Steak Fajita Quesadilla …all the goodness of a fajita wrapped in a grilled cheesy quesadilla. The Burrito Loco is another good choice. Grilled sliced steak with refried beans wrapped in a soft tortilla covered in cheese…simple but wonderful. Or should I order the chicken soup, which is nothing like regular chicken soup. It’s made with spicy broth, rice, peppers and chunks of chicken. One bowl and you’ll never want plain chicken soup again. From previous visits we’ve learned the portions are very generous at El Camino. We finally decide to share a full order of steak fajita nachos.
It is served on a platter! We simply position it between us and dig in. Oh the steak strips are so tender and flavorful with grilled onion and bell peppers. It’s while we’re digging in, dripping cheese, and laughing we realize it wasn’t such a bad day after all. We spent the day together, what more could we ask for or want? Sometimes we just need to take a moment, step back and smell the burrito to get everything back in perspective. As we left that evening and waddled out to the car I felt like the cat that had just licked up cream. I was full beyond belief, content and happy. We’ll come back to El Camino Real in Warsaw for our celebrations, take our family, to cheer us up, and just because we want to eat out. It’s like home for us. Only we don’t have to clean up the mess!
