We stayed at the Cliff Manor Inn, which sits upon a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. The Inn operates as a Bed & Breakfast and is owned by Steve Veile. The home was built in 1866 by Judge Arnold Krekel. What is now part of a complete neighbor, back in 1866 there wasn’t much but wide open space where the house stands. Arnold Krekel served as the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri and also had a hand in the founding of Lincoln Institute as a law professor and benefactor.
As we drove up to the street to the house, it stands proudly gleaming bright white with graceful arched windows. The front porch invites one to sit and relax, imagining a simpler time overlooking a beautifully manicured lawn.
Upon arrival, Steve met us and gave us the grand tour of the home while sharing the home’s history. The interior of the home was light and bright which was a nice surprise. So many period homes tend to be darker inside. The hardwood floors were original and in excellent shape with a rich patina. The furnishings were elegant yet inviting. I could picture myself curled up on the sofa before a roaring fire in the fireplace reading a book.
We spent the night in the Krekel room which was beautifully decorated, the main feature being a wrought iron bed. Just off our room there was a balcony overlooking the front of the house. It was a perfect place to sit in the rocking chairs and sip morning coffee while watching the world wake up. Even though every modern amenity needed was provided at Cliff Manor Inn, you still felt you had stepped back in time. For example, the TV was tucked away in an armoire. In the dining room, sodas were available in the mini frig as well as any hot beverage you could desire. In the evenings, sherry was available for a nightcap before heading off to bed.
Cliff Manor Inn realizes some of us just aren’t early risers so they offer breakfast at two different times. We chose the 9:00 am time slot. As we headed down stairs we were greeted with the aroma of bacon! What a great way to start any day! Tammy Boeschen, the host, greeted us and then proceeded to serve us a delicious breakfast. We started with fresh fruit and yogurt, followed by bacon and French toast casserole. As good as the food was I enjoyed the great conversation with Tammy more. It turns out her family is from the Lincoln, Cole Camp area! Small world, isn’t it?
Cliff Manor Inn is very close to the Katy Trail and many of their visitors are bikers passing through. They are very accommodating providing a safe place to store your bike for the night. I recommend paying this Inn a visit for the exceptional service, and experience of spending the night in a historical home.
